Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Music First Audio Preamplifer convert balanced and unbalanced signals?

The attenuation transformers used in the range of Music First Audio preamplifiers are wound in our workshops in Hastings, East Sussex, United Kingdom.

The transformers are a complicated structure of separate windings, interleaved to give a high quality balanced output. Because of the structure of the transformer secondary the output remains balanced at all volume settings.

With the output ground selection switch moved to the RCA position on the preamplifier, the unbalanced output can be used. The XLR pin 3 output is sent to RCA cold and XLR pin 2 is sent to RCA hot. The transformers can be driven from either a balanced or unbalanced source and its output can be loaded with either a balanced or unbalanced load.
