Introduction

The Music First Audio Classic Preamplifier was introduced in 2003 and conceived to position itself at the very heart of a true high end hi fi system. In just a few short years it has gone on to take pride of place in the high end systems of many satisfied music lovers around the world.

The Reference version of our preamplifier takes the performance of the Classic model to another level. A wealth of research and development over five years produced results which defy expectations. To own the Music First Audio Reference Preamplifier is to experience audio perfection.

Our products are built by hand in on the south coast of the UK. This allows us to offer a wide range of custom options and modifications.

Description

The Music First Audio Reference Preamplifier is designed to sit at the centre of a high end hi fi system. Connected between source components and power amplifiers it controls level and source selection. Like all Music First Audio preamplifiers, it features an optional +6dB of passive gain to accommodate source which might otherwise require active boosting. However, the Reference Preamplifier's +6dB operation is seamless, simply turn the level control up and the passive gain engages automatically.

It is housed in a full sized, custom designed aluminium case measuring 88mm x 432mm x 250mm

The core component of the Reference Preamplifier is the TX102-mkIV 'Nickel Brick' attenuation transformer. This hand crafted transformer is a complete revision of the original and highly acclaimed TX102. The transformers are a labyrinth of layers of winding wire and paper, resulting in a construction so complex it pushes towards the limits of manufacturing possibilities. It features forty five separate 'taps' for a total of forty six (including mute) discreet volume steps.

In addition to the revised winding structure, The new TX102-mkIV Nickel Brick has a 25% larger 'core'. The increased core size means improved level handling and better low frequency response and extension.

For more information about Transformer Volume Control (TVC) please see the TECHNICAL section of our website.

The Reference version of our preamplifier also adds remote control of level. The remote control uses a stepper motor on the rear of the switch, there are no active components in the signal path.

Like all Music First Audio products, each unit is made by hand at our workshop on the south coast of the UK.
